Ok so,, pretty sure I got the Drowning Machine main 5’s day jobs figured out

Mikey (Borophage) - works at a diner in some way, shape, or form. Probably the cook or dishwasher

Indigo / Deadbeat - mechanic. They like working with cars

Axe (Nawid) - garbage man!!! He hangs off the back of the garbage truck

Lasker (Atrophy) - apprentice leatherworker (she probably brings back a scrap piece occasionally for Dakota to use as a chew toy)

Terry - gas station cashier over the summer, no job during school (he comes from a middle class family and is the most well-off of the 5)

Crowley is the star of the hit, long-running sci-fi show Alpha Centauri, playing the Chief Healing Officer, Nathaniel Ashtoreth. He's had the role for the last two seasons, and has been a huge success. He's enjoying fame and success very much.

One of the perks of success is that he's asked to do conventions, and at this particular convention, he'll be co-headlining with the man who played Brant Francis, the Chief Healing Officer for the four seasons before Crowley arrived, Aziraphale Fell. He's never gotten to spend a great deal of time with Aziraphale, but he's had more than a bit of a crush on him since he first saw him in season one. top 5 books of all time?

ok I know I set myself up for this but it is literally impossible to answer. I love so many books for so many different reasons, and every book hits different depending on when you read it, right? I contain multitudes, etc etc etc. THAT HAVING BEEN SAID! Here are 5 books that have had a big impact on me:

Pride and Prejudice (I know it is cliche to include this but I don't care - I didn't think I gave a SHIT about romance or anything even close to this genre until I encountered this book in middle school and fell in love with it. The wit, the sly insightfulness about the strengths and foibles of the characters, the FEELINGS!!!. Chef's kiss. There is a reason it is a classic.)

Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind (I LOVED this book when I was younger. Re-read it so many times. Still have the first line memorized. Is it still my favorite? No. In retrospect there are some deeply troubling aspects of it. But parts of it were great, and it was SUPER formative for me.)

Kindred by Octavia Butler (Historical fiction/sci-fi? An exploration of love, and slavery, and the sins of the past? I don't know how to describe this in a way that does it justice but damn. it is so good.)

the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde (ridiculous, exciting, funny, and so full of references. They're good books brant.)

Imperial Radch trilogy by Ann Leckie (the first 50 pages of this took so much mental adjustment to figure out the world and make my brain STOP trying to parse gender in a gender-free society. The rest of it just made me love Breq to pieces. Great, exciting sci-fi that is so empathetic and caring while still not excusing shitty behavior or shitty institutions.)

Honorable mentions/other formative wroks: His Dark Materials series, Green Rider Series, Murderbot series, Fifth Season series, the Alchemy Wars series (by Ian Tragillis), Boxcar Children, Redwall, Dragonriders of Pern, Heralds of Valdemar, The Neverending Story, Fingersmith, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Outlander, Teixcalaan, Uprooted (by Naomi Novik), Priory of the Orange Tree, Queen’s Thief series, Unconquerable Sun ... (could keep going. will stop now though. even though in 10 minutes I WILL kick myself for not including like 20 more things on here, I'm sure. ETA: yes I did already come back and edit this to add more things. books: I just think they’re neat?)

what is your favourite genre?

Hands down it is fantasy, with Sci-Fi a very close second. And for both of those I tend to like action/adventure-y stories with a heaping dose of FEELINGS and ANGST but also hope?

what non-fiction books do you like if any?

oh lots. I don't read nearly as many non-fiction as fiction, but I do like pop science, criminal justice/forensic science, and history/biography books generally.

Some favorites are Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Just Mercy, The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist, Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World, How We Die, Stiff, Poisoner's Handbook, Homicide (by David Simon), Mountains Beyond Mountains (about Paul Farmer), The Cooking Gene, Kitchen Confidential, Salt Fat Acid Heat, and De Profundis (just finished it!).

Really want to read: Savage Appetites: Four True Stories of Women, Crime, and Obsession; Taste Makers: Seven Immigrant Women Who Revolutionized Food in America; The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma; and Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants. Also, someone recc'ed the Richard Ellman Oscar Wilde biography and I'd love to read that soon too!
